Food and Culture: "Scotcharoos"
Scotcharoos are an important dish in my family. I can't remember the last time my family had a gathering without having scotcharoos at the dessert table. Scotcharoos have been a major part of shaping my family and bringing us together. They give my family the identity within ourselves. My family would undoubtedly be different without scotcheroos. Whenever a major party was happening, whether it was Christmas, New Years, Thanksgiving, or the Super Bowl, scotcheroos would always be there.
When I was young, my dad would invite his friends over to our house to watch football games. One of his friends would always bring this certain dish to the parties. I loved that food so much, so I asked my mom what kind of food it was. She told me they were called "scotcharoos". She said that they were basically butterscotch rice crispy treats with milk chocolate on top of them. I asked her to make them whenever we had any gatherings or special occasions, and the tradition has stuck ever since.
The memory I've had with scotcharoos came in the fall of 2009. My high school football team had just hired a new coach that year, and we were coming off of a horrible previous season. We had a great year so far, going 7 and 2 coming into our final game of the regular season against our cross-town rival, Urbana. We hadn't beaten them in a while now, so we were aching for a win. We ended the game beating them 49 to 7, earning us an 8 and 2 record and a win against our rival. What a way to start a first head coaching season for my coach, and the Urbana game was a highlight of our year. Following the game, my mom had made probably 75 scotcharoos for the team to eat in celebration. Now, when I think about scotcharoos, I think about that season, how great it felt to beat Urbana, and how great it was to celebrate with my teammates. Scotcharoos show that you can enjoy them with your intermediate family and also your football family, and that's why I enjoy them so much.
