Food and Politics
After viewing the film Food, Inc., I began to question the politics of food. For example, what exactly are food corporations putting in our food? Are there any unsafe or unknown ingredients in my food? Will this food make me sick or possibly even kill me? Consumers such as myself shouldn't even be thinking about these questions, let alone publicly asking them. I learned from Food, Inc. that only a few corporations control all aspects of food in the United States, despite the varieties of foods and ingredients. Many of the corporations own the farms that animals are raised or crops are grown. A growing controversy dealing with food corporations is their need for mass producing animals and crops. As a result, the corporations put genetically modified seeds and animals in the farms in order to keep up with the massive consumer demand. The product ends up being a genetically modified food. The main question is if these foods are healthy and safer for individuals.
With these genetically modified foods, mainly fruits and vegetables, foods are able to last longer without rotting. This idea sounds great to the consumer because of guaranteed freshness. However, how does one know when the food has gone bad? This is the main problem for these genetically modified foods. Many consumers haven't bought in to the genetically modified foods. Many are skeptical to these foods because of the harmful ingredients of the food. Some of the conservative people would rather eat food straight out of the field and without any artificial ingredients or pesticides. Even though some people might object to these genetically modified foods, these foods will probably end up taking over the majority of our food.
